We became fans of cellist, vocalist and composer Ayanna Witter-Johnson, after seeing her perform live at the Barbican last year (check out our review here) and were thrilled to learn that she is performing a gig in celebration of International Women’s Day this coming Friday (8 March) at the Forge Arts Venue. Ayanna released EP Truthfully in 2011 and we are eagerly awaiting a full album from this insanely talented woman.
We caught up with Ayanna and asked her what IWD means to her …
International Women’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on both the positive progress that has taken place in recent times, with regards to gender equality and also to address future steps to be taken to ensure that the rights of women are successfully honoured. In my music, I celebrate and highlight the achievements of various women from all walks of life, from political activists to mums. I am so excited to create an evening of music dedicated to this theme that means so much to me as a young woman and really looking forward to sharing it!
For her IWD gig Ayanna is also joined by special guest vocalist Gwyneth Herbert – it promises to be a powerful recital. Check out this incredible video below and trust us, when we say, she is even more enthralling live – so get yourselves down to the Forge this Friday…we’ll see you there.
