Nothing ushers in festival season like a mixtape, take a listen to our top six picks from Communions Records’ Bushstock festival next month.
With the summer season so nearly upon us (we don’t know where the sunshine is either but thankfully, this one’s an indoor gem!), we’re super excited to welcome the fifth year of Communion Records’ multi-venue one-day event, Bushstock back to London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire.
Take a listen to our must-sees from this year’s event, which takes place on Saturday 13th June, below – it’s a doozy!
Honeyblood, ‘The Black Cloud’
After having their debut record on repeat since its release last year, we were giddy at Scottish pair Honeyblood’s #RSD2015 exclusive with this one. Here’s hoping it makes it into their Bushstock set list next month with its festival chant: “All we want to see is blue skies”. Preach, sisters.
Misty Miller, ‘Next To You’
Slipping seamlessly into an equally brittle punk blast, South Londoner Misty Miller‘s latest single ‘Next To You’ is a brilliantly brattish strop of indignation, all bundled up in Miller’s signature wit and animal onesies. And who can argue with that?
Charlotte OC, ‘Hangover’
Certainly not trying to insinuate anything with this track but Sheffield-born vocalist Charlotte OC’s sultry shuffle channels all the skin-prickling electro might of fellow Brit songstress, Natasha Khan. Grab the Moodyman remix download of the track here, and add it to your iPod ahead of next month’s live show.
All We Are, ‘Utmost Good’
Liverpool bagged the European capital of culture in 2008, right from the Eastern clutches of equally artistic metropole, Norwich (“a fine city”, not award-winning but still fine..) and Scouse trio, All We Are are testament to that accolade. We’re a big fan of this disco gem, not least for fellow Liverpudlian Stealing Sheep‘s novel cameo in the vid. Merseyside, unite!
Nadine Shah, ‘Stealing Cars’
With a similar vocal might to gothic popstrel Anna Calvi, Brit vocalist Nadine Shah‘s most recent single ‘Stealing Cars’ is a strong contender for set closer, surely? Fretwork thrashing, fist pumping brilliance, we shah-nt be missing her at this year’s Bushstock (#sorrynotsorry).
Lucy Rose, ‘Our Eyes’
Touring alongside similarly buoyant indie types Bombay Bicycle Club chum has clearly had an effect on singer songwriter Lucy Rose’s blissful pop numbers and latest single ‘Our Eyes’ is no exception. And as a diligent reader reward for making it this far down the post, you can bag a free download of her latest three track EP right here.
