In the second of our weekly round ups, we cook up a visual feast with our top picks from the last week in video.
She Makes War
‘Paper Thin’ is the latest release from multi-instrumentalist Laura Kidd, aka She Makes War. A tender acoustic song about personal redemption, the awesome video features Tanya Donelly. It was shot during a freezing February in New York and Boston, beautifully animated by award winning illustrator Viviane Schwarz.
This song will blow your little socks off. Within it’s short lifespan, Mitski‘s ‘Your Best American Girl’ goes from delicate ballad to thrashing guitar track, carrying the classically trained singer’s stunning vocal and an addictive 90s bassline. The super stylish video was directed by Zia Anger and features “a Japanese girl never quite fitting in with the genre’s surplus of white American guys”. Could this be one of the best songs of 2016 so far?
Last week M.I.A. dropped ‘Rewear It’, a H&M collaboration in celebration of World Recycle Week (April 18-24), during which shoppers are encouraged to recycle old unwanted clothes for store credit at the high street chain. Vibrant and bass-heavy, the video sees M.I.A. getting jiggy alongside some badass global dancers.
‘Drive’ is the new single from British singer Lauren Ray. Recently featured on BBC 6 Introducing, it’s a pop-country crossover that brings to mind the soulful sensibility of Norah Jones. “There are no guarantees in love,” says Lauren. “This song is about having the courage to really go for it, even though you don’t know how any new relationship will turn out.”
We round off this week’s list with something completely different. Genderqueer noise artist Dreamcrusher is the alias of Luwayne Glass. They make “nihilist queer revolt music” that shatters through your speakers in a distorted wave of electronics and ethereal vocals. The video for ‘Codeine Eyes’ offsets the harsh technology of their sound against a beautifully natural forest setting.
