Playlist | Best of 2016

We’re back for the annual review of the best albums of the year to obsessively categorise, reshuffle, reconsider and – finally – make a choice. As ever, this year’s overspill into the best of playlist shapes up as a selection of new angles on and further recordings from our established heroes – Radiohead, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Pixies, John Cale, Mogwai, Swans, Dinosaur Jr, Explosions In The Sky, The Julie Ruin, Deftones, Tim Hecker, Garbage, Violent Femmes, Steven Wilson and Teenage Fanclub among them – alongside new stars and lost voices who operate in a similar rich tradition. Take for example, the incredible blues stylings of Filipino-American singer Aireene Espiritu, who on her album Back Where I Belong, covers the songs of iconic R&B songstress Sugar Pie DeSanto. It is simply amazing.

Elsewhere, a collaboration between Georgia Ruth (Plu), Patrick Rimes (Colorama) and arranger and producer Mason Neely, gave birth to debut album Bendith, one of the most beautiful, pastoral, orchestral folk-tinged albums of 2016.

Other HEAVYweight releases included Architects, Gojira, Black Peaks, Oathbreaker, Sumac, Dyse, HECK, Black Tusk, Mantar, Toska and Beastmaker alongside some amazing psych/hard rock from All Them Witches, Clutch and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – offset beautifuly by the new album Island Songs from neo classicalist Olafur Arnalds.

There was shoegaze loveliness from Nothing, Monster Treasure, Pity Sex and Lush, while Battle Lines, School Of Seven Bells, Flock Of Dimes, Submotion Orchestra and Local Natives nailed the sparse electronic tinkerings.

Trade Wind and True Widow were their usual, fantastic, slow, heavy and cerebral selves and Hinds, Skating Polly, Muncie Girls, Speedy Ortiz and Bleached woke us from our reverie!

Oh yeah and Xiu Xiu covered the music of Twin Peaks in case that one slipped past you, while Tacocat longed to see the world through the eyes of Dana Katherine Scully.

In a year of Brexit, an unelected Prime Minister, grotesque xenophobia, police killing civilians in America, the bloodbaths of Syria and Iraq, The Zika virus devastating Brazil, earthquakes in Italy, refugees being denied their basic human rights, austerity, the Coral Reef being officially killed off – oh, and Bake Off being sold to channel 4 – we really, really needed music to provide some sort of respite from the hell that unfolded around us.

Thankfully that’s exactly what we got.

For those of you reading this while crammed on to a Southern Railway train, you’ll be glad to know that this playlist comprises of 200 tracks, taking approximately 14 hours to listen to. So you can play it twice on the Brighton to London commute and really familiarise yourselves with the songs.

Merry Christmas everyone :)
