On September 2, DIY Space for London will be the venue for this year’s LOUD WOMEN Fest! Featuring some of Europe’s most exciting new riot grrrl and pop punk bands on the main stage, plus some extra special surprises on the bar stage.
Here’s an exclusive first look at the line-up for this not-to-be-missed show:
Hands off Gretel
4 piece Alternative Rock/ New Wave Grunge band from South Yorkshire. Launched February 2015 by Singer/Songwriter Lauren Tate and guitarist Seán Bon, Hands Off Gretel have since been described as One of the most exciting new bands in the ‘Bands To Watch’ feature in the US Alternative Press Magazine”. In September 2016 the band launched their debut album Burn The Beauty Queen after running a very sucsessful crowdfunder backed entirely by their online fanbase.
Raging feminist post hardcore punk from South East London, led by Ren Aldridge. Their debut album ‘Talk of Violence’ was released in November 2016, described in The Independent as a ‘tour-de- force of savage vitriol directed at capitalism, greed and ignorance’.
Jo and Nicky D’arc make up The Twistettes with their dirty, twisted bass sound, a hit of swinging flare and thumping driving drums. They are punk, riot grrrl, real-deal indie with a touch of psychobilly.
Sink Ya Teeth
Norwich based 2 piece. Think collaborations between the Eurythmics and ESG, Donna Summer and Grandmaster Flash, Grace Jones and the Tom Tom Club.
Feminist punk witches from hell. Ngaire Ruth described them in The Girls Are as “the Ramones meets Bikini Kill, kid you not”.
Solo Jen from Colour Me Wednesday doing more personal sad/angry songs and playing distorted guitar with a backing band and synth.
Dirty sax punx. Led by newcomer Moe (who is married to The Ethical Debating Society’s Kris, fact fans), with Cassie Fox (LOUD WOMEN’s founder and matriarch) on guitar.
Soul, indie, riot grrrl, urban, folk… hard to know where to pigeonhole Lilith Ai. But we do know that she’s an extraordinarily talented singer songwriter, performing for the first time with a full band.
Alternative post-punk trio from Manchester. Louderthanwar named them ‘Ones to Watch 2017’, with “Powerful post-punk with touches of grunge and new wave… a sound that you need to hear”
Riot grrrl-inspired feminist electro-pop act with keytar. “Full of big blowsy choruses and tricky couplets that recall the heady days of Republica… joyous, infectious pop music from East London.” – Everett True (Collapse Board).
A brand new, all-girl punk band from Brighton, offering ‘pure uncensored female rage’!
The 4x UK Beatboxing Champion performing original songs and solo beatbox routines with live DJ.
The Baby Seals
Empower Pop trio from Cambridge. ‘Think Dum Dum Girls tenacity for songwriting, with an eye for an in-joke (‘My Labia’s Lopsided But I Don’t Mind’). Here’s a band whose music will shine anywhere, anytime.’ – The F-Word.
Velodrome Music is an alt rock musical project by Katherine Christie Evans, a singer, songwriter and guitarist. “A very special artist”- Tom Robinson, BBC6 Radio 23rd July 2016. “Kate Bush meets medieval minstrels meets the White Stripes”- Oxjam Oxford, Oct 2016.
Joining the Fest all the way from Berlin, this Northern Irish + Aussie band have been described as “a cheeky swagger that we’re really digging, 80s art pop”, by BBC Across the Line.
Singer songwriter Lea has written and recorded two solo albums as well as having played Reading and recorded Peel sessions back in the day, with her bands Kidnapper and Spy 51.
