Introducing | Beatrice Eli

Introducing | Beatrice Eli

Here in the UK, we've developed a bit of a penchant for Swedish young ladies (get your mind out of the gutter). Recent years have seen a flurry of up and coming artists emerging from the land of Ikea, pear cider and perfectly formed mustaches - a veritable smörgåsbord, if you will. Now joining the ranks of the uber-talented Ane Brun, Robyn, Lykke Li, and First Aid Kit is one Beatrice Eli - purveyor of atmospheric, electro-tinged pop, and new toast of the Scandi-taste-making crowd. We caught up with her to discuss how rad the UK music scene is (very), her influences (many) and being 'the one'... (more...)

Introducing | Frankie Rose

Introducing | Frankie Rose

If Frankie Rose’s name doesn’t seem immediately recognisable, readers will no doubt be familiar with the bands this prolific musician has been in over the years: Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls and Vivian Girls, to name a few. 2010 saw Frankie embark on a solo mission with her backing band, the Outs, and the same year, their self-titled debut, Frankie Rose and the Outs, was released. 2012 sees Frankie taking a different route altogether and releasing her first ever solo album under her name only. The album is Interstellar, and takes a very different direction from the music made by Frankie’s previous incarnations. It’s almost a hark-back to the 80s, and has an unashamedly pop sound. the girls are chatted to Frankie in Brooklyn to find out more about her new record. (more...)

Introducing | Azealia Banks

Introducing | Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks (UH-ZEE-LEE-YUH) seemed to explode out of nowhere when the '212' video dropped online earlier this year. But the now 20 year old Harlem rapper and singer had already caught the attention of the industry in 2009 when she signed to XL Recordings. Things didn't quite go to plan however and Miss Banks has already given them a right dressing down in a recent NME article - you really don't want to get on this one's bad side. Controversy swarms around the potty-mouthed beauty; copyright issues with the Lazy Jay sample used on '212' saw any postings of the video removed. (more...)

Introducing | The Cut Outs

There can be no doubt that emerging London-based trio The Cut Outs mean serious, serious business. In terms of both their music and their presentation, this group have a really direct and honed approach - their website is professional and well maintained, their photography is precise, and their music is unapologetically streamlined. Such collective gestures leave the band’s audience in no doubt of what The Cut Outs are about – audacious rock filled with brazen grit and mettle. (more...)

Introducing | Delta Hotel

Introducing | Delta Hotel

Brooklyn just can’t stop giving when it comes to cool bands and thriving indie scenes. The latest to come straight outta the Brooklyn DIY scene is Delta Hotel the fun-filled pop punk band set to make your lives just that little bit happier. Lead by singer/songwriter Kiri Oliver, the girl with the cute voice, the band began as the home recording project of Oliver and guitarist Dan Smith. The duo met through the Connecticut DIY scene while Oliver was attending Wesleyan University and had an immediate connection.  They decided to move back to Oliver’s native Brooklyn in 2010 and recruited bassist Beth Ochs and drummer Jason Orlic to form a full band. Introducing | Throwing Up

Introducing | Throwing Up

The 1990s was the decade during which grunge was born, but more significantly, the decade that Riot Grrrl became its bastard daughter and was the call to arms for brilliantly angry girls the world over. At the time of its arrival I was around 8 years old so was, of course, too busy spending days obsessing over Mario 64, watching Gladiators on a Saturday night and giving Barbie some pretty progressive haircuts to notice.  However, I signed up in a major way at the age of 15, dressed in silky babydolls and clunky boots and scribbling Kathleen Hanna lyrics all over my school books and I would wager that Throwing Up, a 3 piece from London, might have a similar story to tell. Introducing | The Choo Choo Trains

Introducing | The Choo Choo Trains

Many a joke could be made about the playful name The Choo Choo Trains but there aren’t many jokes that you could make about the band’s amazing lo-fi songs. Now before we continue, a disclaimer; The Choo Choo Trains are twee to the nth degree. They are as twee as Zooey Deschanel looking at a picture of some kittens. Now we’ve got that out of the way those who want to continue wait here and those that have had enough, here’s a ball go play with it.  (more...)

Introducing | The Broken Seas

Introducing | The Broken Seas

There’s something to be said for a good musical dynamic - a rejection from the very banal and trite idea that a winning band formula consists of guitar, bass and drums (kudos to those mavericks of the 60s who really let loose and spiced it up with a rhythm guitarist who played guitar AND dabbled in keys). The Kills had it when they launched themselves as a hot two piece way back in 2003 with their lo-fi rumbling recordings. Gossip continue to have it through Ditto’s notorious Southern blues drawl which saunters out defiantly over their irresistible disco hits.  Even PJ herself strives for it, album after album, with her eclectic love of eccentric instruments and unorthodox tones.
