If you are one of the millions of people who've been seduced by the sexy wub wub of dubstep, chances are (what with reading the girls are n'all), you'll be wondering where all the lady producers are.
Concern would be justified. After all, those women who manage to jump the hurdles of electronic music's hostile prejudice and boys-club booking agents, are far too often belittled as anomalies, or pimped out on their looks. So breathe a sigh, because we lucked out. Not do we have some incredible, and successful, female dubstep artists out there, but one of the key taste-makers who helped define the genre was DJ Mary Ann Hobbs. Her 2 hour special 'Dubstep Warz' that hit Radio One way back in 2006, and her subsequent compilation 'Warrior Dubz', greatly helped launch the careers of heavyweights Burial, Spor and Ikonika. One big shot of oestrogen at the very beginning, and dubstep's explosion online has only helped women climb up the ranks. (more...)
I’m a lady who loves good music and delicious food. If I can rock out and eat a cake, then I’m a happy grrrl. I suspect I’m not alone in my appreciation of these two things. Just admit it, when you went to that last gig, didn’t at least part of you want tea, coffee and a range of baked goods to be served at the bar, instead of tepid beer and sweaty peanuts?
Luckily for me, some bands have clearly felt similarly, thoughtfully combining these two pleasures in the perfect delicacy: a song that sings of food. (more...)
Flame-haired Vivian Girl Katy Goodman's new project La Sera has been amassing a fair bit of attention: with their dream-woven, retro melodies, short, understated songs and twee-pop leanings, the band have rightfully made an impression on both fans and critics alike.
Their self-titled debut album was released this week, and to celebrate the band will be playing at The Lexington this Sunday, 20 Feb. Fancy heading down with a friend? Well, we've got two tickets to give away! (more...)
Well crikey moses, X Factor is starting to *really* hot up. With only four places in the final next week, Saturday's episode was always going to be tense: who would make the cut? Would we finally see the end of 'real woman' Tesco Mary? Would Bieber-lites One Direction manage to worm their way into the top spot, having only sung one harmony during the entire course of the series? Would Cher break my heart and do some more bad rapping?
If you watched on Saturday, you'll know the answer to the above questions was a resounding yes. In addition, we witnessed girl-crush Rebecca sing a beautiful (if a little dull) version of Amazing Grace, heard Matt's voice crack for the first time, and saw Cher doing what she does best: sporting massive hair and doing some bad raps. The winning moments were, however, Rebecca's super classy version of Show Me Love and Cher's teary, wavering bid to stay in the competition.

Oh the raps, the raps, when will they stop? It wouldn't be so bad if they were out and out funny, or alternatively if Cher could actually rap well, but the combination of ZERO skills and a 'I take myself way too seriously approach' is really starting to wear thin.
Rebecca on the other hand, was a picture of class and poise. Lovely jubb.

Well well well, what an epic snooze-fest this week's X Factor proved to be. Cher reverted back to her bad-rapping, lip-curling derivative self, Mary curled up and died under the pressure of yet another dull ballad, Treyc shouted her way through another catastrophy and Katie did the one thing I thought was impossible: being so annoying that my desire to lamp her actually increased. Had thought I was maxed out on Waissel-related venom, but it seems butchering a No Doubt song was all that was needed to tip me over the edge (that, and the moment she actually said, out loud, in public, on the telly, that she 'vibed off the audience'. GAK).
Even my beloved Rebecca let me down - could they have chosen a more zzzz-worthy number for her to perform? Methinks she needs to get a little bit fierce. Do you remember the moment when Alexandra Burke stopped being a a nice girl with a great voice, and started being a VIXEN? Some of that please....

This week, for your pleasure, is lovely little Cher. But hold the phones - THERE ARE NO RAPS! Not sure how I feel about that. Annette Barlow
