Flame-haired Vivian Girl Katy Goodman's new project La Sera has been amassing a fair bit of attention: with their dream-woven, retro melodies, short, understated songs and twee-pop leanings, the band have rightfully made an impression on both fans and critics alike.

Just A Girl | The Winner!
Huge congratulations to She Makes War, the winner of the Just A Girl competition! She Makes War will be playing at Ladyfest Ten on Sat 13th November at The Relentless Garage, alongside some incredible artists including new project from Le Tigre's JD Samson, MEN! A thoroughly deserved win by an amazing artist, I am sure you will all agree!
After months of submissions, deliberations, votes, comments, soul-nourishing support and discovering an array of the most gloriously talented artists, last Saturday saw the live final of the Just A Girl competition and cripes, was it a corker! The six finalists of Just A Girl (as voted in by the public) took to the stage at The Horatia pub and treated the 200 strong crowd to an evening of varied and accomplished lady-made music in support of Ladyfest Ten. We have joined up with our friends at Red Stripe to offer the girls are readers a pair of tickets to attend The Q Awards Pre Gigs at Kentish town HMV forum this Saturday to see Rose Elinor Dougall (and others including Tinashe and Mark Ronson)!

Just A Girl | The Finalists!
If you have been following the girls are over the past few months, you will be well acquainted with the Just A Girl competition. In support of Ladyfest Ten, we launched a quest to find some amazing female musicians in need of support. The winner would get to play at Ladyfest Ten in November. The entries flooded in, and we were spoiled for choice. Our panel of swoonsome judges comprising yours truly, Viv Albertine, Camilla Pia, Charlotte Richardson Andrews and Ruth Barnes, deliberated long and hard over the entries, and we whittled them down to just 15. The Just A Girl long list.
The long list is a thing of beauty: 15 incredible artists side by side, flying the flag for lady music makers all over the world. Spanning multiple genres and many localities, this awe-inspiring collection of women has been gaining a great deal of well-deserved attention over the last nail-biting fortnight. Just A Girl | The Long List
After an exciting six weeks of entries, questions and deliberation, we can finally release the Just A Girl long list!
Much contemplation, tea drinking, cig smoking, ipod shuffling and nail biting was undertaken by judges Viv Albertine, Ruth Barnes, Charlotte Richardson Andrews, Camilla Pia and Annette Barlow to compile the top 15 entries, but here they are in all their glory.
Now it's over to YOU dear readers! Peruse the long list below, where for each entry you will find a track, pic, mini bio and the judges comments: carefully make your selections and vote through the poll below. Spread the news and support your favourites!

Competition | Just A Girl!
****DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND, THE COMPETITION IS NOW ALSO OPEN TO SOLO ARTISTS!**** Oh shit London. It doesn't get much better than this. Being official supporters of Ladyfest Ten, and super-keen advocates of young ladies picking up an instrument and making some noise, we are launching a battle of the bands competition, for which the grand prize is a live slot at Ladyfest Ten in November! The winner of Just A Girl will be playing alongside some incredible names (if I told you, I'd have to kill you) and will not only receive radio airplay, but will also feature as part of a Ladyfest Ten documentary. Becoming giddy with excitement? Well hold your horses, it gets even better. Competition | Playlist-o-rama
For those of you who regularly follow the girls are, it will come as no great surprise that Annette Barlow do be lovin' the 90's. Guilty pleasures? Heck no – this is soul music. I love the 90's in the same way as I love meat: unabashed, unadulterated, and infinitely lusty. Now, I recently made a 90's playlist so epic, it rendered me a joy-filled dancing fool. More importantly, it got me thinking: could there be a playlist from another decade that could out-joy my creation? Am I missing out on some dancin' potential? (more...)
