Song of the Week | Kreayshawn

'Gucci Gucci'

A tiny white girl hailing from Oakland, the daughter of Elka Zolot of garage-punk band The Trashwomen, "occasional lesbian", member of the White Girl Mob, music video director, and recent vixen to grace the cover of ID magazine. There's a lot of ground to cover when introducing the recent flurry of 'next big thing' accolades surrounding Bay-Area's Kreayshawn - accolades kick-started when single 'Gucci Gucci' dropped back in May - a lot of ground to cover, and a lot for people to disagree about. Song of the Week | Sparrow and the Workshop

Song of the Week | Sparrow and the Workshop

We've been hearing a lot from this Glasgow-based three-piece of late - virally, on blogs, live sessions and lots of radio play. Sparrow and the Workshop have been around for a fair while now, their witty brand of folk-rock garnering them a burgeoning following. We can't stop listening to this track, its egg-themed video cementing the band's charm. (more...)

Song of the Week | CocoRosie

Song of the Week | CocoRosie

Gallows

With their childlike voices and this eerie, Salem-inspired video, CocoRosie have crafted the perfect song. Shifting between rigid dress, and unfettered nudity, 'Gallows' sees the duo trip and weave through sparse forestry, and spectral instrumentation - a glowing example of their impressive potential. Song of the Week | Kate Bush

Song of the Week | Kate Bush

The Sensual World

In light of the release of Kate Bush's Director's Cut, we can't help revisiting this beautiful track, originally released in the late 80s. Taking inspiration from Jame Joyce's Ulysees, the story goes that the Joyce estate prevented Bush from using parts of the text in the recording, forcing her to write her own, beautiful version. And aren't we grateful for that fact.

Listen to the new album to hear Bush's brave reworkings of her established works - and let us know what you think. (more...)

Song of the Week | Barbara Panther

Song of the Week | Barbara Panther

Empire

We cannot get enough of this track, or this artist. With percussive shudders and elastic vox, Barbara Panther fuses Bjork's experimental leanings with Fever Ray's dark tones, resulting in something genuinely original and exciting.

After popping up across the blogosphere during the past few months, Panther last week made it into The Guardian - and it is only a matter of time before the wider world cottons on to her off-kilter, performative charm. (more...)

Song of the Week | Dumbo Gets Mad

Plumy Tale

We're ready for the Summer. We've been ready for about 8 months. Since the last one ended actually.

What better way to get you in the mood for a couple of months of loafing off work, sitting in parks, drinking earlier than is appropriate and subsisting on ice lollies than by casting your listening devices acrossItalian duo Dumbo Gets Mad's 'Plumy Tale'? Accompanied by a Cali-hued, 70s inspired, docu-style video, this woozy garage-surf hybrid is a proper tonic. (more...)

Song of the Week | Sound of Rum

Song of the Week | Sound of Rum

Sound of Rum's album, Balance, has barely left the girls are's stereo in the past two weeks.

We bloody love them, and the album is a truimph - but if we're honest, most of the time we've been desperately trying to decipher Kate Tempest's lyrics, so fast does she spit 'em out.

Ironic then, that our SOTW is Sound of Rum's 'Slow Slow'. (more...)
