Scared to Capsize
You may remember the winner of our Just A Girl competition last year - She Makes War. The judges and voting public fell in love with her DIY, feminist ethos which she so lovingly applied to her gloom-pop creations. After the success of her (brilliant) debut album Disarm, the South-London lass is now concentrating on her follow up, for which she has set up a Pledge Music campaign. (more...)

Still Windmills
Today's Song of the Week comes courtesy of Sky Larkin - a band the girls are feel are sorely underrated. Purveyors of consistently brilliant, rousing, lo-fi, hooky fare, this is a band who have piqued attention, garnered critical acclaim, and proved their live worth over and over - yet seem to remain 'underdogs'.
Arguably, this is part of their charm - all the same, we salute you Sky Larkin. (more...)
Alala This week's featured song comes courtesy of Brazilian electro-clash quintet CSS - the accompanying video being a wonderful foray into horror-style party times. (more...)
Cry Baby The legendary offerings from Janis Joplin have been occupying the sonic space in the girls are's office this week. We could opine on her inimitable vocals, her gut-wrenchingly honest performances, or her tragic demise - yet none of this would go even one iota far enough to explaining the brilliance of music. So have a listen instead. Yes, we also wish we had a time machine. (more...)
the girls are is teaming up with The Other Woman Music on 21 March for an evening of glorious noise, courtesy of Peepholes, The Hysterical Injury and The Voyeurist.
Taking place at the Old Blue Last, this triple bill consistently features prominently amongst our list of favourite bands - and we'll nab any excuse to see them live. We could go on and on (and on) about how amazing each band is - but we'll let their music do that. (more...)
Work It
the girls are are still tripping over our recent 90's DJ set at Fanny Pack: regular readers will be well versed with our incessant nostalgic hankering, and this evening only served to render our condition more serious.
Our only regret was that we simply did not have enough time to spin any Missy Elliott - a fact we are rectifying right now. No one does double denim quite like La Elliott... (more...)
Fast Fast
Let’s Buy Happiness release their new single 'Fast Fast' on 28 Feb 2011, and to celebrate, the girls are is making it our Song of the Week. Featuring the distinctive vocals of front-woman Sarah Hall, the song opens with a tribal-esque drum beat before launching straight into an infectious pop melody spliced with delicious harmonies, ringing guitar lines and head-bopping drum beats. A real sunny track to start the week, you’ll be humming it all day. (more...)
It's no secret that the girls are fierce love the 90's. Hell, we go on about it *all* the time - so when we were given the opportunity to DJ at a night solely dedicated to the joys of the aforementioned decade, we literally jumped at the chance.
Fannypack will be taking place next Saturday at The Horatia in Islington, and will feature DJ sets from yours truly, Girl Germs, Ladyfest Ten and more. In honour of our (vaguely inappropriate) mounting excitement, we're giving you a 90's double bill for Song of the Week - the inimitable talent of Lauryn Hill, and the hip-pop stylings of TLC. Today is Valentines Day - scourge of the idle-hearted and commercially discerning. It is not a day the girls are tends to embrace, however, in 2010 our anti-Valentines sentiment left some people a little cold.
So, here's our anti-Valentine's Valentine song, courtesy of the brilliant tUnE-yArDs. It's about feelings and stuff, but not a vomit-inducing red heart, single rose or box of cheap chocolates in sight. Lovely jubb. (more...)
